March in Richmond. The Bradford pears are blooming, pollen is starting to coat everything in sight, and you are stepping outside for the first time in weeks and realizing your house looks like it has been through something.

It has. A Central Virginia winter does a number on exteriors even in mild years. Rain, occasional ice, fallen debris, and months of minimal sun on the north-facing surfaces all leave their mark. Spring is when it all becomes visible.

Here is what is actually worth addressing and what can wait. Not everything needs immediate attention, and we would rather be straight with you about that than sell you services you do not need yet. Start With Your Gutters

If your gutters were not cleaned in the fall, they are almost certainly holding standing water right now. Get the gutters cleaned before the spring rains hit consistently. Late March or early April is ideal timing. It takes about an hour for most homes and it prevents the kind of water damage that costs thousands to fix. Walk Your Roof (From the Ground)

You do not need to get on the roof. Just walk around your house and look up. You are checking for three things.

Black streaks. Those are algae, and they have been growing all winter. They will accelerate rapidly once warm weather arrives.

Green patches or raised spots. Those could be moss or lichen, both of which are more aggressive than algae and can damage shingles if left untreated.

Missing or damaged shingles. Winter winds and ice can loosen shingles, and this is the time to catch it before a spring thunderstorm turns a loose shingle into a roof leak.

If you see significant staining, schedule a roof cleaning sooner rather than later. The longer biological growth stays on the roof, the deeper it embeds into the shingle surface. A roof that gets cleaned annually is a routine job. One that has been neglected for three or four years takes significantly more time and product.

Check Your Siding

Walk the perimeter of your house and look at the siding from different angles. The north side will almost always look worse than the south side because of reduced sun exposure. Green and black staining on the siding is the same algae and mildew issue that affects roofs, just on a vertical surface.

Pay attention to the bottom 2-3 feet of siding closest to the ground. Splash-back from rain hitting the soil line creates a consistent moisture zone that promotes rapid mold growth. If that zone looks significantly darker or greener than the rest of the siding, a house wash should be on your spring list.

Also check where downspouts discharge. If the water is pooling near the foundation instead of draining away, you have got a drainage issue that is separate from the cleaning but worth fixing while you are thinking about it.

Assess Your Deck and Outdoor Wood

After months of freezing temperatures, moisture, and limited use, most decks in the Richmond area look their worst in early spring. Gray, dull, and sometimes slimy.

Do a quick structural check first. Walk the deck and feel for soft spots or excessive flex. Check the railing connections. Look at the ledger board where the deck attaches to the house. If anything feels loose, spongy, or visibly rotted, address the structural issues before worrying about appearance.

If the structure is solid, a professional cleaning will bring the wood back to life. If the previous stain has worn through and water is soaking directly into the wood, plan on cleaning plus re-staining. But if you are planning any outdoor entertaining this spring and summer, or if you are thinking about selling, a clean driveway and walkway make a bigger visual difference than most people expect.
